TVO Privacy Policy
TVO believes in the protection of your privacy and safety online. Particularly for children.
1. What Does TVO Do?
TVO makes available Government of Ontario online curriculum courses to Ontario students on behalf of the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Education. This Online Course Catalogue site (“Site”) provides registered Ontario students (“Ontario Students”) with a detailed list of all online Government of Ontario, Ministry of Education approved curriculum courses (“Online Courses”) available for Ontario Students through the Ministry of Education.
2. What Information does TVO Collect
We may collect two types of information from you when you visit any TVO site, Personal Information and Non-Personal Information. Both terms are described below.
- Personal Information – TVO will collect Personal Information only with your consent or where it is voluntarily provided by you.
- Non-Personal Information – This is any information that cannot be associated with an identifiable individual. A common example is aggregated statistical information (ie. the length of time users spend visiting a website), or other anonymous information, such as the type and version of browser being used to access a website. Your computer and its operating system, browsers, and memory contain vast quantities of transaction data and records regarding your use of websites you access.
If you contact TVO by e-mail for any reason, including in respect of the information contained in this Site, we will collect your e-mail address and the full content of your e-mail, including any attached files or other materials or content you include with the e-mail.
3. What is Personal Information (Personal Information)?
“Personal Information” is any recorded information about an identifiable individual, including:
- age, sex;
- education, grades;
- SIN, OEN; address, telephone number;
- e-mail address;
- personal opinions of an individual; and
- individual’s name when with other Personal Information.
4. What Personal Information does TVO Collect?
TVO may only collect Personal Information that is specifically authorized at law, or where the collection is necessary to provide you with a program or service. TVO collects Personal Information directly from you unless another manner of collection is authorized by law.
No Personal Information will be collected from you when visiting this Site.
5. Use and Disclosure of Personal Information Collected
Purpose for Use of Personal Information – Though TVO collects no Personal Information from you through this Site, we may collect Non-Personal Information in order to enable us to make general improvements to the Site, and ensure that content standards of the Site or application are rigorously upheld.
NOTE: In order to register for the Online Courses listed in this Site, you will be linked to another site where you will be requested to voluntarily provide necessary Personal Information. There will be a separate Privacy Policy on that registration site.
Third Party Use
TVO may share information collected through your access and use of this Site with the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Education.
6. Consent
Consent
As no Personal Information is collected through this Site, you confirm that you are not a minor and agree to abide by the terms and conditions of this Site and Privacy Policy. You understand and agree that information collected through this Site may be stored and processed by us or our service providers in Canada or other countries throughout the world, and the laws of the jurisdiction in which the information is stored and processed will apply to its storage and processing.
Children and Parental Consent
Many seeking to access this Site and the Online Course information it contains may be children and minors (persons under the age of majority in Ontario or their province or jurisdiction of residence). In this event, we encourage parents and guardians to be aware of and participate in their children’s online activities. Minors may not use the Site unsupervised and we ask that you do not allow your child to submit any Personal Information to us. We do not knowingly collect any Personal Information of minors or children through this Site. If you believe your child has provided Personal Information to us through this Site, please contact our Privacy Office at privacy@tvo.org and we will delete it. Parents are requested to review this Privacy Policy and discuss its main features with their children, in a manner that the child will understand.
7. Retention and Destruction
Any Personal Information received by TVO is stored in a secure location and only accessible and retained for as long as it is necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it is collected. Personal Information is destroyed upon the earlier of TVO’s determination that it is no longer necessary to retain such Personal Information or the date of destruction pursuant to TVO’s Records Retention Policy [insert link]. In either instance, such destruction takes place within sixty (60) days from such determination.
8. Access to Personal Information
By TVO - Only employees in the course of performing their duties and third parties contracted to provide services to TVO who require access to Personal Information in order to discharge these duties or perform these services are granted access to such Personal Information. TVO only conducts business with reputable third parties whose privacy practices are in keeping with TVO's own standards, and who agree to be bound by confidentiality provisions.
By you - TVO ensures that you have a means of accessing your Personal Information. If you wish to determine whether we hold any Personal Information about you and/or wish to access that Personal Information, you may contact us by email at privacy@tvo.org .
9. Security
When the disclosure of Personal Information or other sensitive information is required on a TVO website, any transfer of such data is made via a secure connection, conducted within a firewall and therefore secure from outside probes.
The servers making TVO websites available, perform standard logging which permits the collection of Non-Personal Information on ISPs and the type of browser and operating system used. Logging also allows TVO to track generic Non-Personal Information regarding total accesses to TVO websites.
10. Changes to Privacy Policy
This policy is subject to change and we invite users to check back frequently.
11. Cookies
TVO uses session and persistent cookies on its websites . Session cookies are data files temporarily installed in users' browsers to help them navigate the site. Persistent cookies, computer files stored on hard drives, are used to help measure traffic to the site. Cookies are used to enable TVO to compile statistics, and not to collect Personal Information. While users may disable or remove cookies, doing so may make it impossible to fully access TVO websites or the products or services it offers.
No Personal Information is ever stored in a TVO website cookie, even if your name, telephone number or e-mail address was entered on other parts of the website.
The following details explain how and when TVO might use cookies:
As you explore a TVO website, a cookie will be set on your computer which will record your IP address. This will tell us which pages you visit and information such as the amount of time spent on each page. This helps us identify new and repeat visitors and tells us how long visitors spend on our websites and which pages receive the most traffic. This tracking is to enhance your experience by allowing customization and an easier access to the items on the TVO website you enjoy.
As we do not require login information on many of our websites, including this Site, cookie technology is the only method we use to track your preferences and are only identifiable on one computer. This means a user cannot see the activities he or she may have created on another computer.
If cookies are deleted, the information will be lost. Also, if a computer is updated with new operating software, cookie information will be deleted.
